In early September 2019, Jamaicans all over the world got together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of our most revered cultural icon Rt. Louise Bennett-Coverly, lovingly known as Miss Lou. According to coordinator for the Project GYAL initiative, Joan Andrea Hutchinson, “both men and women are victims of gender-based violence, and though in most cases women are the victims, the. The event will feature a rare Florida appearance by the multi-award-winning Jamaican Folk Singers, Labrish with “Dat Bumpy Head Gal”, Joan Andrea Hutchinson, as well as a throwback to Miss Lou and Mas Ran with Malachi Smith and Maxine Osbourne, plus a selection of folk songs by the Tallawah Mento Band. Joan Andrea Hutchinson is a young poet who has championed Jamaican Creole. She follows in the steps of Louise Bennett who highlighted Creole on the world stage. Joan strongly feels that Creole is a.

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts presents ’The Sweetness of Poetry and Tings’ - a lunch-hour concert featuring Joan Andrea Hutchinson, Dr Michael Abrahams and WOW. The concert will be held at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA), UWI, Mona, on Thursday, November 12 at 1 p.m. The show is open to the public and admission is free.
’The Sweetness of Poetry and Tings’ continues on the fine tradition and the mandate of the PSCCA to present performing arts representing various genres, as part of the process of entertaining and enlightening the university community and the wider population. This particular event presents an interesting, eclectic mix of three writers and performing poets, with three exciting and complementary styles.
Headlining the event will be author, poet and cultural educator Joan Andrea Hutchinson, who will take the audience on a journey into the creative practices of Jamaican ’poor’ people with readings from her soon-to-be-published book Kin Teet Kibba Heart Bun. This represents the culmination of four years of research, producing a document which celebrates how Jamaican ’poor people’ creatively stretch a dollar to make their lives work.
Presented with her trademark humour, Hutchinson reminds us when we used to draw starch, carry half pencil and half book to school, make milk-box balls and use lime and salt and a piece of zinc in the backyard to make white clothes dazzle. She will also be performing material from her six already published CDs and two books.
The concert also features the thought-provoking and inspirational poetry of WOW (Winroy Williams). A self-proclaimed ’student of the mind’. His rural upbringing has fostered an appreciation for nature and the arts, manifested in his love for creative writing and music. The consistent and universal themes in his poetry include love, nature, spirituality and philosophy and you chuckle as you see yourself as the protagonist in his work.
laughter and reflection
Completing the package is medical practitioner, poet, songwriter and humourist Dr Michael Abrahams, whose prescription is to make you laugh while you reflect. His impressive collection of topical poems and songs analyses, poeticises and sometimes pokes fun at religion, politicians, relationships and celebrates Barack Obama and Usain Bolt. Abrahams uses humour therapy to ease the pain of his patients in labour and, onstage, delivers exciting doses of his special brand of social commentary.
Come out, relieve the stress and invite your friends to ’The Sweetness of Poetry and Tings’.

“You’re the ackee in my saltfish Condensed milk in my tea, The patty in my coco bread. Without you there is no me”
“Jus becaw mi tell one man say him teet look like Dem a go gi di dentist lockjaw An mi tell one ooman say her mout a ratten teet Should a punishable by law”
After reading those two excerpts, the face of one individual instantly comes to mind - that of Joan Andrea Hutchinson, “The next Miss Lou”, “Dat Bumpy Head Gal”.

Whichever name you may know her by, one thing stands out at all times: she is Jamaica’s cultural ambassador.

Following in the footsteps of Amina Blackwood-Meeks and the late Dr the Honourable Louise Bennett Coverley (the original Miss Lou), Joan has embraced her culture, with a passion for ensuring it is preserved and kept valid and current at home in Jamaica, as well as in the Diaspora.
The essential “jack of all trades” when it comes to the imparting of the Jamaican culture, Miss Hutchinson is an author, storyteller, actress, language trainer, motivational speaker and cultural educator.
A firm believer in the saying, “kin teet kibba heart bun”, she utilizes wit and humour to bring across essential themes and aspects of the Jamaican culture.
Her riveting stage presence allows Joan to communicate her thoughts and ideas in any setting, to any audience, and it is received with the same level of awe and understanding.

Her storytelling style is effective to capture the attention of children all over, and her enthusiasm and vivacity will spell-bind adults regardless of the socio-economic status. That is the effect of Joan Andrea Hutchinson.
One poem, one performance, even one quotation is enough to have even the skeptic salivating for more.
Her unique talent brings the Jamaican culture into perspective, through practical, everyday Jamaican experiences and proverbs, expressed in the authentic, inimitable Jamaican dialect.
She has a vast repertoire of Jamaican poems, which are compiled in audio/visual cd’s and books.
Her most famous works, and incidentally some of my favourite include, but are not limited to:
*“Mi Let Yuh Down”

*“Workaholic”

*“Ward 21”

*“Dat Bumpy Head Gal”

*“Playgroun”

*“Love Cyaan Done”

*“Madman Power”

*“It Hot But Hush”

*“Lion Heart Love”
*“Ef Ooman Strike”

*“Dat White Witch Henny”

*“Di Hog Name Crowd”

*and her tribute to Louise Bennett: “Tenky Miss Lou Tenky”.
Here too are other poems from her book
Inna Mi Heart, Jamaican Love Poetry
These include:
Regardless of whether you are Jamaican-born, a Jamaican-at-heart or simply in love with the Jamaican culture and lifestyle, Joan’s work will appeal to your sense of cultural pride and broaden your appreciation for the Jamaican people.
It matters not if you are a fan of “Bredda Anancy”, in love with the intricacies and rhythm of the Jamaican dialect, or curious regarding the meaning behind the proverbs or “old people sayings”, there is a Joan Andrea Hutchinson poem to “whet your appetite”.
So the next time you want a taste of some authentic Jamaican culture, just pick up a work from Joan Andrea Hutchinson and “tek kin teet kibba heart bun.”Joan Andrea Hutchinson Poems
